Dr. Matassarin

"Dr. Ben" -- one of Wichita's oldest practicing physicians -- receives first annual Clinical Excellence Award

Internist Dr. Benjamin Matassarin, who turned 90 in July, was recently honored during Galichia Heart Hospital's first annual Clinical Excellence Award ceremony.

A Kansas native, Dr. Matassarin has been practicing medicine -- almost exclusively in Wichita -- since 1945, when he graduated from the University of Kansas School of Medicine.

"My dad was a doctor and I always said I wanted to be one," said Dr. Matassarin, who turned down a full basketball scholarship to Baker University to go to medical school at KU. "I didn’t care who you were, if you were sick, I treated you, the famous or not famous ... it didn’t matter. I treated the patient."

Dr. Matassarin is an associate professor at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita and has held faculty positions at KU and Kansas State University. A pioneer in diabetes and liver disease research, Dr. Matassarin published the first test for liver cell damage in 1952.

His medical career spans numerous leadership positions around Wichita, including president of the former St. Francis Hospital medical staff and various committee chairs. Dr. Matassarin remains an active member of the Internal Medicine physician staff at Galichia Medical Group.

"Dr. Matassarin is a highly respected internist, citizen of the community and great family role model," said Dr. Joseph Galichia, cofounder of Galichia Heart Hospital. "He grew up in medicine at a time when bedside diagnosis of medical problems was so critical because we didn't have all the technology we have today. He made huge contributions in the pre-technology era and he has sustained the same approach."

GHH recognized for Heart Walk support

www.startheartwalk.org

The American Heart Association has recognized Galichia Heart Hospital and Galichia Medical Group with a beautiful plaque for creating hope as a Cause Sponsor for the Association's 2010 Heart Walk in Wichita.

Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of all Americans? In fact, someone dies from heart disease every 38 seconds! Heart disease also kills more women than all forms of cancer combined.  And congenital cardiovascular defects are the most common cause of infant death from birth defects.

The funds all of us raise in Start! Heart Walk will support projects like these:

  • Putting up-to-the-minute research into doctors’ hands so they can better prevent and treat heart disease among patients.
  • Groundbreaking pediatric heart and stroke research. About 36,000 babies are born with heart defects each year —research is the key to saving babies’ lives.
  • Getting life-saving information to those who need it most – information that can save a life, like how to eat better, how to recognize the warning signs of heart attack, and how to talk to a doctor about critical health choices.
  • Get ready for 2011! For more information, click here to visit the Heart Association's Start! Heart Walk site.

Caring about patients: Galichia Heart Hospital adds hospitalist program

Galichia Heart Hospital, in partnership with Kansas Inpatient Services, introduced its new hospitalist program in July. Hospitalists are doctors who have advanced training and experience in the special medical care needed by patients during a hospital stay. They treat only hospitalized patients and do not see patients outside of the hospital setting.

"Our philosophy has always been that patients get better care when they have a physician providing for them who is available in the hospital to see them in a timely manner and make decisions regarding their care," said Dr. Adam Flynn, chief executive of Kansas Inpatient Services. "Medicine has just become so complicated that taking care of inpatients is something really useful to do as a full-time operation."

Hospitalists at Galichia Heart Hospital will see patients whose primary care doctors are unavailable or who do not typically make hospital rounds. The hospitalists coordinate care with the patient's primary care doctor and if additional expertise is needed, a specialist is consulted.

"This is about offering patients the best care possible in conjunction with their primary care physicians," said Steve Harris, chief executive of Galichia Heart Hospital. "We want all physicians in the community to feel good about sending their patients to Galichia hospital."

Galichia Heart hospitalists are board-certified in either family medicine or internal medicine and have experience with a wide variety of inpatient conditions.

"Patients typically have immediate access to a physician and, as a result, tend to have shorter hospital stays, lower costs, better outcomes, and increased satisfaction. It's good continuity of care," said Dr. Chris Meyer, chief executive of Galichia Medical Group.

"Hospitalists come in and they are very focused on patient care and they take excellent care of them. Primary care physicians also enjoy the advantages of a hospitalist program. They gain more time with their office patients and with their families, and they are able to concentrate and focus their efforts on outpatient medicine while still being fully informed about their patients' inpatient status."
