Endoscopy

Our Endoscopy Lab allows your physician to use a flexible tube known as an endoscope to provide a close-up, color television view of the inside of your digestive tract. Many endoscopes are performed on an outpatient basis and are very well tolerated by patients. Specially trained Registered Nurses (RN’s) provide medications as ordered by your physician to insure your comfort during the procedure.

About the Endoscopy

An endoscopy or EGD allows your doctor to look at the esophagus, stomach and the duodenum. The duodenum is part of the small intestine. The endoscopy is done with an instrument called an endoscope. This is a narrow, flexible tube that goes through the mouth into the upper digestive tract. It allows the doctor to look for any problems and to diagnose your illness and plan specific treatment.

The Day before the Test

On the day before your test you may eat your regular meals. The night before the test, do not eat or drink anything after midnight. Your stomach must be completely empty for the best possible examination. If you are having the test as an outpatient, plan on being at the hospital for 2-3 hours. You must make arrangement for someone to pick you up to drive you home. You will not be permitted to drive as your judgment and reflexes will be affected by the sedation.

During The Test

An intravenous (IV) line will be put in. You will be given medicine through the IV to help you relax. A novocaine-like spray will be given to numb your throat. You will begin the test by resting on your left side. The doctor will pass the endoscope, which is thinner than most of the food you swallow, through your mouth into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This tube will not interfere with your breathing.

This test last about 10-15 minutes and is well tolerated with little or no discomfort. After the test you may feel drowsy and sleep for a short time after the test. A nurse will check on you to see how you are feeling. After the exam, you will be asked to not to eat or drink for 2 hours.
